Knights of the New Crusade
Go Metric Magazine #20 has a pretty hilarious interview with the Northern California's only Gospel Garage Punks, the Knights of the New Crusade. In it the Knights mention a new record they are putting out, Knight Beat: A Challenge to the Cowards of Christendom. Pick up the magazine, read the interview, and whatever you do, don't take yourself to seriously...

Bomp is back with another great release! The Invisible Eyes are an incredible primitive stomp/garage/psyche band capable of launching your mind into a trance like hysteria whilst begging your backbone to let slip. Unlike a lot of wimpier psyche that has seemed to proliferate the genre over the years, these guys can punch out a real rock n' roll energy. So much of that stuff begs you to smoke reefer, lay down, and die. The Invisible eyes, by contrast, beckon you to get off yer ass and shake a tail feather. The sound has some serious kick to it and is not slowed down in the slightest by their distorted vocals, fuzzed out guitars, and omni present organ. There are a few songs that I wasn't crazy about but they are really the exception to the rule on this one. This is probably the most interested record I have heard in a long, long time and comes highly recommended.
Will he ever learn?
I don't know that this is confirmed to be true as I couldn't find a news source to confirm it...but according to various emails going around and posts on message boards, Link Wray died today Nov. 19th at 76 years of age. Rest in Peace, Link. Link was an amazing guitarist with style, that's right STYLE. Link's sound will surely be kept alive as the masses continue to attempt to ape his genius. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this truly original character. Spin a Link tune today and pay homage.
The Coffin Lids, out of Boston, play wild and wooly garage rock n' roll, and I stress the rock n' roll. It's really hard for me to make a correlation with their sound and other bands--but here they remind me of the Neins or Booker T and the MG's crossed with the Humpers or maybe a little like Murder City Devils. Realize that they are definitely more on the rockin' side of the spectrum, but they are blessed with good taste. Straight up rawk goes straight to the trash bin for me nowadayz anyways. Standout songs on here include - I'm Gonna Have My Way (with the 5678's), Action, Tonight You're Going to Die. Everything else on the cd is still way listenable. Bands like the Coffin Lids and The Mistreaters just may fill the void left by bands like the Makers in previous years, as said Makers continue to spiral into irrelevance with hairspray, scarves, and unrivaled egomania. Coffin Lids - 'Round Midnight- is a winner and immediately goes into heavy rotation here at

Made it out to Mr T's Bowl in LA for the King Khan & BBQ Show...Kind of a weird scene at Mr. T's. Lots of aged barflys, belligerent illegals, and gong show rejects for the open mic nite. Ended up hanging outside for a bit and was more than impressed with my brothers new found friend repeatedly pantomiming his gunning down of the president, George Bush. There was also a guy there with his face painted like a skull, singing threw some kind of voice senthisizer to god awful goth tunes...by far the biggest oddball of the nite. But I digress... King Khan & BBQ show were absolutely amazing. They ran through their more popular tunes and covers: Fish Fight, Waddlin' Around, Chuck - a - Muck, and Out of Time to name a few. They have such a rockin' attitude. Fun, Fun, and more fun was the agenda of the night. Hell, King Khan even did a wardrobe change mid song on stage as he became a dead ringer for Tina Turner (post-beating). The energy of the band was contagious and about 30 die hard fans danced to their hearts content before storming the stage (as invited) for the last song of the night. If you can't get into the rock n' roll that these guys deliver, then it's time for a head check or an impromptu ear exam. If you get a chance check them out on the remainder of their US tour. You'll be glad that you did. I know I was...Look for new photos this weekend at
Yes, apparently it's true. After some roughing up by customs officials, the King Khan & BBQ tour is back on track. Check 'em out when they come to your house. And for those who are interested, here is a video for their kick ass video for the song, Fish Fight.
Heard about a documentary coming out soon on 70s Boston punk rock n' roll sensations, the Real Kids. I haven't been able to find out details other than the premier is in San Francisco in the near future. If anyone has the details on the film dates and locations, please fill me in. Here's an interview with the film maker, Cheryl Eagan-Donovan:
Speaking of BBQ as I was in a recent post. This cd originally escaped my hot hand... I must admit, I was oblivious to Mark Sultan's a.k.a. BBQ involvement in the Spaceshits and Les Sexareenos ...but dug Les Sexareenos (Spaceshits were not a fav. of mine)...but anyways I digress. A friend of mine pointed out how great this was, and I dug through a mountain of mail to make a real pass at listening to this thing. BBQ's Tie Your Noose is the must have c.d. of the year, I do declare! There's certainly a vibe to this record. Think the energy of early rockabilly via Sun Records mixed with the a guy doing his best at being Ronny Spector. That's probably not even a good comparison, fuck it, it works for me. Bottom line, this thing shakes and shimmies, and delivers awesome vocal melodies over his one man ryhthm section. The thing that sets BBQ apart, he actually has the BALLS to really SING. Granted their's some hootin' and hollerin' but he's a really interesting singer, and you can hear his heart all the way through this recording.
Dicks at the Scenebar in Glendale Nov 4th - - -Shit and I'm slated for work to be in San Diego the rest of this week. I hate my life! SERIOUSLY...Could someone please take photos for me?
Jeffrey Novak One Man Band - Think I reviewed this guy a while back on a couple of cdr's he sent me...but I was flipping through some recent mailings and I ran across the 7" released a while back on fistful of records. Comparisons to the late Hasil "the Hunch" Adkins are inevitable, but Jeffrey does it in a spirt all his own and at a speed that if the Hunch comparison was accurate it would be Hasil at Mach 10. I love the mania captured on this lofi recording. Jeffrey wails and screams and spits and moans with a fervor that must speak to his local roots in Tennessee. The songs on here are fuckin' great. "Down", "Don't Wanna Live ALone", "Get Out". "Rockin' Horse". Drop your guitar tabs and your music sheets, this stuff eminates right from the soul. If you like BBQ or Ape City R & B, then this shit is surely for you...
A.N.S. - Romancing the Phone 7" (Banal Existence Records) - This is some good spirited Texas Skate Punk. In the spirit of JFA, the Dead Kennedy's, and the Faction comes ANS. They sound a lot like the aformentioned Kennedy's, especially on the first track "Wrong Turn". REally fast hardcore skaterock. Vocals remind me a little bit of Los Olvidados. Although I'm not a huge hard-core fan, I can see myself listening to this before my next trip to the skate park. Oh, and by the way, ANS stands for "Annihiliate New School" in case you were wondering... Grab yer board and hit the pool.
My new favorite band. King Louie Bankston and friends put together some serious sleazy rock n' roll. German Cajun is an amazing full tilt raw rock n' roller. Great throaty vocals over some serious punchy musical licks. YOu can't help but feel the energy on this one. On the flip there's a cover of the Rings' "Automobile". I want more!
